A Message from our NYC Correspondent, Spunky Lisa.

Oy, I'm exhausted today. I think I have the flu. I skipped both of my favorite classes and all I managed to do was drag my pussy down to the gynecologyst to get an annual PAP smear. The first class I missed today was E/Merging Media with Professor Fred Ritchin. Fred Ritchin is the former photo editor of The New York Times. He wrote a book titled, In Our Own Image. He is very interested in the duplication and alteration of images. Do we as consumers, need to know if an image has been altered? How does photojournalism function today when photos can be completely manufactured? How did we really know that there was a riot in Tiananmen Square?

Also, of course McLuhan's book Understanding Media gets a lot of attention in class. One McLuhan discovery is that every new media is based on an existing media, such as film based on theatre. Then, after a while the new media diverges enough from the former media to become an entity unto itself. Such as film did when it changed the perspective by using oblique angle shots and close-ups. Now, think about human cloning for a second. If we are using humans as the medium, the clone would be based on us. And just like film became something more than just taped theatre, what will a clone develop into? The whole thing just blows my mind. And by the way, this week's Time Magazine suggests that human cloning is right around the corner.

Last Friday I checked out the group Antibalas, a jamming Afrobeat band,at a place called, "No More" in Tribecca. There was a huge percussion section. Our dear little Stuart's roommate, Michael Herbst, is the saxophone player, which is a pretty cool instrument to play in a band like this. Really though, it made Gabriel, Josh's brother, a bit crabby. He was upset because they seemed like a Fela cover band and he HATES cover bands. Cover bands have nothing original to say. They are not fucking anybody up in any fucking way. I say, fuck that idea because that's not the point. The point is to listen to some ass kickin' African sounds and to dig it. And besides, Fela was out to change the political system in Nigeria. So, in a way, Antibalas is too by carrying on his revolutionary spirit.

This Friday I'm going to check out Body and the East at Exit Art Gallery on Broadway between Prince and Spring. Sarah Porter, a sweet pink girl and novelist, has been going there most Fridays as of late. And this Friday I'm
going to join her. She said that Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio played there last Friday. On previous weeks rumor has it there were belly dancers and exotic singing. Sounds perfect.
